Wiele osób uważa, że Bydgoszcz nie jest miastem turystycznym. Wynika to z nieznajomości i braku promocji turystyki w Bydgoszczy.
Oczywistym jest, że Bydgoszcz nie może rywalizować z wielkimi metropoliami jak Kraków czy Gdańsk pod względem zabytków, ale można tu znaleźć inne ciekawe obiekty i miejsca, których brakuje innym miejscowościom. Jeżeli założyć, że o byciu miastem turystycznym decyduje wyłącznie ilość zabytkowych kamienic, to Bydgoszcz przegrywa z miastami pokrzyżackimi i większymi metropoliami.
Ale potencjał turystyczny to coś więcej niż zabytki i stare muzea. Jeżeli za miejscowość turystyczną przyjąć taką, która ma lasy, trasy na spacer, miejsca do wypoczynku, dobre ścieżki rowerowe, to Bydgoszcz wypada bardzo dobrze. Noclegi w Bydgoszczy stoją na wysokim poziomie i ze spędzeniem nocy na pewno nie będzie problemów. Należy też pamiętać o ogromie szlaków turystycznych, imprez sportowych i kulturalnych, kąpielisk, oraz o dobrze rozwiniętej (i coraz bardziej trendy) agroturystyce. Do potencjału samego miasta należy też zaliczyć otoczenie, miasta sąsiadujące, które też mają sporo do pokazania turystom, ale to temat na oddzielne potraktowanie.
